The 2013 Kopaonik Business Forum
The Serbian Association of Economists and the Serbian Association of Corporate Directors are organizing the 20th Kopaonik Business Forum 2013. This year’s Forum will be held on March 13-15, 2013 at the Convention Centre in Kopaonik. Each year the Forum gathers over 500 participants, including the representatives of governmental and regulatory bodies, diplomatic corps, international financial institutions, academic community, as well as representatives of real and financial sectors.
The Forum, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has already become renowned as a place where economic experts and business practitioners evaluate the effects of the Government’s structural and economic policies. The Forum provides relevant stakeholders with an opportunity to put forward different views and arguments in order to formulate feasible and effective policies. Consequently, every year this important debate is followed by the creation of a document entitled “Kopaonik Consensus”.
In recent years, the Forum has been held under the auspices of the Prime
Minister of the Republic of Serbia. This year we have even stronger
reasons to continue with this tradition. First of all, geopolitical
repositioning of Serbia has not yet been completed, which has negative
economic consequences. Also, the economy is faced with technical
recession, mostly resulting from the transition process implemented thus
far. Moreover, the level of economic activity is not sufficient to meet
current needs of the population or to enable sustainable employment. The
effect of the credit crunch has continued since the beginning of the
crisis and a new problem is a fiscal cliff. In the environment of twin
deficits (current accountdeficit and budget deficit), maintaining
country’s liquidity gives rise to further indebtedness.State is a player
that holds the key to solution, but all government measures do not
automatically lead to positive effects.
Compatibility of institutional framework with the EU is still a guiding idea ofour politicians. However, due to the Great Recession of 2008-that has hit the EU, the actual investment inflow from the EU is certainly not sufficient. There is an interest of other investors, but a negotiating process is long and a considerable amount of time is required to put the decisions into effect. The fact is that only good economic solutionsmay save the future of Serbia and induce progress in other areas. Reindustrialization is the only guarantee of sustainable development. Reindustrialization is based on “3Rs”, including investments in real sector, monetary model of real exchange rate and public finance based on real budget. Therefore, the title of this year’s Forum is:
“Reindustrialization and Related Issues”
The Program Committee has foreseen a debate on the following three topics:
March 13, 2013 - Legacy and the first steps towards recovery
March 14, 2013 - How to place macro policies in function of industrial policies?
March 15, 2013 - Industrial policies in agriculture and food processing
Appreciating your interest in economic issues, as well as your understanding of the significance of Serbia’s economic recovery for the country’s political stability and international position, we attach paramount importance to your participation in our Anniversary Forum.
We hope you will be able toadjust your schedule and take part in the realization of this outstanding event, which economists and business community in the region have already recognized as “Serbian Davos”.
