Representatives of the International Economic Association (IEA) have successfully completed their first visit to Belgrade following the confirmation that the Serbian Association of Economists will host the 21st World Congress of Economists in June 2026.
Over the past three days, the SES delegation, led by President Aleksandar Vlahović, held a series of working meetings to finalize all necessary details regarding the program and organizational aspects of the event.
“During the three-day visit of the International Economic Association delegation, we had very productive meetings where we addressed all the key topics in order to define the details and once again demonstrate that we will deliver at the highest level when it comes to organizing such a prestigious event,” said Aleksandar Vlahović, President of the Serbian Association of Economists.
The preliminary agenda for the Congress has been set, and more than 1,000 of the world’s leading economists from top universities are expected to gather in Belgrade from June 22 to 26, 2026.
“The significance of this event is best illustrated by the fact that the Chair of the Congress Program Committee is esteemed Harvard University Professor Eric Maskin, Nobel Prize laureate in Economics. We are expecting several other Nobel laureates, as well as numerous economists who have held top advisory positions in the world’s leading economies.”
The IEA World Congress will be held in our region for the first time and will return to Europe after 20 years. This exceptional event will be a major opportunity for universities in Serbia and the region to strengthen ties with the global academic community, and for policymakers and the business sector to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchange innovative ideas, share experiences, and gain insights from the world’s top economists.
Since 2013, SES has been a full member of the IEA and the sole representative of Serbia in this prestigious organization. Every three years, the IEA organizes the World Congress of Economists. The previous World Congress was held in 2023 in Medellín, Colombia.
